In a recent development, the New York Attorney General Letitia James, along with the New York State Gaming Commission, has taken a firm stance against online sweepstakes casinos operating illegally in the state. Cease-and-desist letters were sent to 26 online sweepstakes casinos, including popular brands like Chumba, Luckyland, and Global Poker, for offering casino games and sports betting using virtual sweepstakes coins that can be redeemed for cash or prizes.

The crackdown on these online sweepstakes casinos comes as a response to the illegal gambling activities and potential risks associated with unregulated online gaming. State Senator Joseph Addabbo has voiced his support for the efforts of the Attorney General and the Gaming Commission in protecting New Yorkers from the dangers of illegal online gambling.

Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer emphasized the need to eliminate these “unscrupulous, unsecure, and unlawful” online sweepstakes games that pose a threat to consumers. The collective aim is to create a safer and regulated online gaming environment for age-appropriate individuals, while cracking down on unauthorized and potentially harmful gambling operations.

This decisive action by the New York authorities sends a clear message to operators engaging in illegal online gambling activities and underscores the commitment to safeguarding consumers and promoting responsible gaming practices in the state.
