In a promising turn of events for Macau’s gaming industry, the month of May saw a significant uptick in revenue, reaching a post-pandemic high. Analysts attribute this growth to the increased activity during popular Chinese national holidays. Gross gambling revenue in Macau during May hit MOP21.19 billion, marking a 5% year-on-year increase and a 12.4% rise from the previous month of April.

This surge in revenue was fueled by the alignment of an extra weekend in May and the celebration of national holidays, which drew in a larger volume of visitors and players. The overall year-to-date revenue for Macau is now nearing MOP100 billion, indicating a positive trajectory for the region’s gaming sector.

Seaport Research Partners, in their analysis, highlighted that Macau exceeded expectations in May, benefiting from the higher revenue generated on weekends compared to weekdays. The early occurrence of the Dragon Boat Festival this year also contributed to the heightened activity in the region during the holiday period.

Looking ahead to June, analysts anticipate a slight dip in revenue compared to May but still project a year-on-year growth. Factors such as upcoming large concerts and the continuation of the holiday season are expected to sustain the momentum in Macau’s gaming market. However, potential disruptions from typhoons as the season progresses could impact performance.

Despite these uncertainties, Seaport remains optimistic about Macau’s gaming outlook for the full year, forecasting a 4% increase in gross gaming revenue. This positive projection is supported by anticipated marketing initiatives by operators and improving consumer trends in China, along with potential economic stimulus measures that could bolster consumer confidence in the region.
